Common sentences in English speaking - part I

• Đáng lẽ, thay vì: In stead of doing something.

• Việc... : The fact....

Ex. The fact IMF put a restrict rule on developing countries sometimes, it goes so far that it interferes the dosmestic affairs of those sovereign countries -> Việc IMF sử dụng những điều luật khắc nghiệt tại các nước đang phát triển đôi khi đi quá xa (?) vì nó can thiệp vào công việc nội bộ của các nước có chủ quyền.

• Đáng lẽ ra: Should have done.Ex. She should have said to him the truth if she had known who he was

• Hẳn đã· : Must have done.

Ex. I can’t find my car’s key. I must have left it at home.

• Ai mà chẳng biết: Who doesn’t know that, Everybody knows that

• Vấn đề là ở chỗ, cái khó là ở chỗ: The problem is that, the difficulty is (that)

• Cứ như kiểu này, cứ cái đà này... : As it is, if things go on like this.

• Một thực tế hiển nhiên không thể phủ nhận là: An obvious undeniable fact that. (Not An undeniable obvious fact that)

• Than ôi !: Alas !

• Không gì sai bằng nói: Nothing as wrong as saying...

(Câu trên này có vấn đề)

Ex. 1. Saying all PHP is terrible would be as wrong as saying all ASP is fantastic

2. Although the types of chemical bonds in water and amalgam differ, saying that amalgam will poison you is just as wrong as saying that drinking water will make you explode and burst into flames

• Người đi trước, tổ tiên, ông cha đã không sai khi nói...: People in the past (ancestors) were right saying...

• Chờ xem: Wait to see.

• (Không) cần phải nói: No need to say, it is necessary to say...

• Đã qua rồi cái thời....: Gone is the time when + clause

Có thể dùng Gone is the time + of

Ex. Gone is the time of a less than perfect audio sound

Ex. Gone is the time when we had to stand in line and wait for the turn to buy food.

• Điều đáng ngạc nhiên là: What’s surprising is (that)...

Ex. What’s surprising is that we won.

• Điều lạ là: What strange is...

• ... Là một chuyện,…lại là một chuyện khác: ...is onething, and....is another thing.

Ex. Whether or not international associations can invest for Vietnam is onething, and effectivelly using the invested capital is another thing.

 Việc các tổ chức quốc tế có thể đầu tư vào Việt Nam hay không là một chuyện, còn việc sử dụng hiệu quả vốn đầu tư đó lại là một chuyện khác.

• Xu hướng hiện nay....: The trend now + clause/is + phrase.

Ex. - What is the trend now regarding this?
- But the trend now affects more and more people in more and more aspects of their lives (MSN Money - Welcome to the risk economy - Jubak's Journal).

• Không thể khác được : It can not be otherwise.

Thường dùng cả câu, kết thúc luôn, không kèm theo đoạn nào nữa, hoặc có dấu hai chấm theo sau.

Ex. - It can not be otherwise: the Moon uses the Sun’s energy to radiate through the personality…

- Humans accept that it can not be otherwise

• Không còn lựa chọn nào khác: Having no other choices/wayouts/...

• Ấy vậy mà : And yet

Ex. A few people is as beautiful as her, and yet she doesn’t look well in picture (ăn ảnh).

• Chẳng bao lâu: Very soon + clause.

• Tính đến...: Take something into the consideration/ account

Ex. Anh ta sẽ có đủ tiền để thành lập công ty riêng trong năm tới nếu tính đến cả sự giúp đỡ của bạn bè.

-> He will have enough money to establish his own private company if it takes his friends’ helps into the consideration.

• Theo tôi nhớ/ biết: As far as I remember/ know.

• Theo tôi : As for me / I think that...

(remember not to use Arcording to me)

• Chừng nào.....: The reality shows as long as + S + would + V

Ex. The reality shows as long as the US continues to treat unfairly to Isalism countries, there would be terrorism -> Chừng nào Mỹ còn đối xử không công bằng với các nước Hồi giáo, chừng đó vẫn còn chủ nghĩa khủng bố.

• Tin hay không thì tùy: Beleave it or not.

• Hơn bao giờ hết, hơn ai hết : More than ever before/ more than anyone else.

• Không ai ngờ : No one could think.

• Sớm hay muộn thì.... Sooner or later...

• Cuối cùng, rốt cục : In the end/ after all/ eventually/ finally.

• Phải thừa nhận là : It should be admitted that.../ It is necessary to admit the fact that...

• Không thể không kể đến : It is impossible not to mention to...

• Không dám, không phải để tâm đâu! (Khi không chấp nhận lời cảm ơn): Don’t mention it.

• Chẳng trách : No wonder why/ not surprisinglly....

• Xét về một phương diện nào đó : To some extent, in some aspect, in some line.

• Xét về tất cả phương diện : In all aspects.

• Cứ như thế này thì chẳng mấy chốc ... : As it is very soon + clause.

• Hóa ra....: It turns out.

Ex. Oh, you turn out to be a fan of Manchester.

• Đến tận bây giờ : Even by now / only by now...

• Là ai/ cái gì nữa nếu không phải là tôi/ cái gì đó : Who/ what else if not (me/ something).

• Không thể như thế được : It can not be so.

• Nếu tôi nhớ không nhầm : If my memory doesn’t fail.

• Đã … lại còn … hơn: Make sb more and more + Adj or make + Adj + sb become more + Adj.

• Còn nói gì đến : Let alone...

Adv. let alone - much less; "she can't boil potatoes, let alone cook a meal"

Ex. Anh không có nổi một chiếc xe đạp, nói gì đến xe máy -> You haven’t even any bicycle let alone motorbike.

• Cùng với thời gian : As the time passes...

• Tôi thấy không có gì tốt ở : I see nothing good in...

• Một thực tế đáng buồn là : There’s a sad fact that...

• Đến đâu/ chừng nào: To what extent (khác với to some extent = về một phương diện nào đó).

• Đã, đang và sẽ có : Has had, is having and will have.

• Chưa đề cập đến, không nhắc đến : Not to mention…
